North Charleston buying its own antique firetruck

What if you had a fire museum with no firetrucks to exhibit? That's what North Charleston hopes to avoid by buying its own collection of antique firetrucks. The city has purchased a 1956 American LaFrance fire engine from Napoleon, Ohio, for $7,000. The city will spend another $2,500 to bring the truck to North Charleston in January.

Charleston is renowned for its many points of attractions for visitors. Today's column is going to expose the best-kept secret. It is one of the finest exhibitions in our time: the Fire Museum. This is one of the finest, if not the finest, firetruck museums in the country.

It could be considered the Lowcountry's nicest garage. Tucked inside the new fire museum in North Charleston are all kinds of firefighting exhibits, including two that actually belch big puffs of smoke. But at its core, this building was designed to provide shelter and display space for 18 fire trucks built between 1857 and 1969.
